Philip Obermarck brings us the mummified heart of a Norse giant.

While going through his famous grandfather’s belongings after his passing in 1937, violinist Lars Sigerson discovered this casket with its gruesome contents. It appears to have been passed from generation to generation within his family for hundreds of years. The explanation and whatever story that goes with it has been lost to the ages.

The inscription on the casket is written in old Norse runes and reads:
“Behold! Within this casket lies the heart of the fierce and terrible giant known as Hrungnir, slain this day by Fafrd the Red whose bravery and cunning shall live forever!”

Spider webs are inherently awesome, but this takes them to a whole new level. New Jersey-based artist Emil Fiore, also known as Rocky, has perfected the art of collecting whole spider webs intact and preserving them behind glass.

Based in New Jersey, Fiore first learned about catching a web in a children’s craft book and, ever since, the idea has stuck. He has used all kinds of sprays and varnishes to master the preservation of each web in its entirety and his hard work has certainly paid off. Spray painted with silver paint and set behind glass, these striking, silky designs are unique and captivating representations of the wonders of nature.

To collect the webs, Fiore spends his days hunting for spiderwebs in Palisades Parks, New Jersey. From May through October, he catches an average of 20 webs a day, five days a week, which he estimates to be roughly 2,000 in total per year. On average, a spiderweb lasts for only a few hours. So when Fiore comes upon an intact web, it’s an exciting moment. He says, “When I find one, I’m exhilarated. The web shimmers and dances in the sunlight with the slightest breeze. The silk refracts light casting rainbows of color at me. It is a thing of beauty and I wax ecstatic, but the capture demands all my attention. I stop breathing to make the catch and time stops with me. Then the hunt continues.”

because of how my phone is synced to my old computer, i can’t put the carly rae jepsen album on it without erasing every song i already have, which i am legitimately considering doing, but haven’t done yet. that’s pretty much the only reason i have listened to anything that’s not that album. this song popped up on shuffle and it made me realize that another reason i will forever wave a flag for vapid pop music is that vapid pop music has actually become pretty emotionally critical for me. like, not that i don’t still love me some tori amos, but i look back at hours i spent in high school listening to sad music while i was sad and partly because i was sad, and i just don’t really get it anymore (for me, personally, oh my god, the last thing i would ever do is judge how someone relates personally to music). why so serious, baby isabel? why?

i mean i guess at the time the whole wallowing in burgeoning depression thing was like, novel for me, or something. but — so, the crowd reading arcadia last night was mostly people with opera connections, which always ends in music talk that although centered differently always makes me feel exactly the way i feel when i’m in a group of people talking about punk. the (extremely talented) young composer of the group asked where in our bodies we feel like we hear music, because it’s never really just the ears, is it? answers mostly fell around the chest, the throat, the solar plexus. for some music — sad music, classical music — i would say, for me, the chest, the lower throat. but i turned to the one person in the room i can reliably count on to know what a pop music is, and mentioned how also i liked it when i was drunk and music was playing really loudly, because then i felt it ALL OVER, and he was like, “word,” and we talked about the immense boost kanye west’s stronger provides to our ability to clean the house or exercise, and i guess it’s kind of like an outside-in thing for me, these days. maybe it’s because i have crazies like people have seasonal allergies, so a lot of times when i’m sad, even really sad (especially really sad), i know enough, at this point, to know i’m not sad so much as sadness is taking up residence in my brain the way snot takes up residence in your sinuses. i like sad music like i like sad poetry or sad novels or sad movies, but when i’m there, riding out a sadness wave, i don’t really want something that gets my heart or my intellect. i want something that gets me shaking my hips (awkwardly) while doing the dishes, or wiggling my shoulders sitting at my laptop, or hosting a one-person dance party on the corner, waiting for the light to change (i know, i know, the data is in: i am the most boring new yorker), something that pulls my body in that direction without my even noticing it until it’s started, the way by the time your brain recognizes pain your nervous system has already pulled your hand away from the flame. it’s pretty useless for me these days to try to use my brain or heart when they’re compromised; now i reach for things i can trust will remind me without having to say it that we can always (we can always) party on our own.
